Keeping your home safe when on vacation.
The cold winter months have many of us already thinking of warmer weather get away. While you are planning your warm weather get away, we are thinking of tips to keep your home safe while you are away. The last thing you want to come home to after a vacation is discovering your home was broken into.
Here are a few tips that can help make your home less of a target to break-ins.
Lighting. Leave some outdoor lights on, especially around the entry ways of your home, to give it an occupied appearance. You may also want to leave a couple lights on or maybe even a TV inside your home.
Answering Machine. A telephone ringing for a long time many times through the day and night is an indicator that the home is empty so try to set it to only ring a couple times. Definitely don’t set your machine to have a message indicating you are away on vacation!
Keys and Locks. Are you guilty of hiding keys in mailboxes or under door mats? These are places robbers have caught on to; leave a key with a neighbor instead.
Doors and windows. ALL doors should be locked. Even those doors leading from the garage to the house or the basement door, make it as difficult as possible to get in. All windows , including second story windows, should all be locked as well.
Inform a Neighbor. Let a neighbor know of your absence and have them keep an eye on your house. Things like bringing in your mail/newspapers daily can help your home look more lived in.
Car in the Driveway. Leave a car in the driveway or maybe ask one of your neighbors or friends to park a car in your driveway while away. This will give the appearance of someone being home.
